She was a British athlete who introduced the popular English women's game of field hockey to the USA from 1901, touring the States and holding training courses at leading women colleges. In 1904 she became the athletic director at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania where she introduced water polo, tennis, swimming, fencing badminton and archery. She founded and edited the "Sportswoman" magazine (the first American magazine for women athletes) for ten years, and helped to found the United States Field Hockey Association in 1922.
She moved to Burley with her American friend Mary Taylor (1862-1936) in the 1920's and they lived in a cottage (The Withies) near Burley Lawn until their deaths. They are both interred at St John the Baptist Church, Burley:
